Planning 2011-2012

Autumn 1 - Friendly Bears
We would firstly like to welcome all our parents and children to our new Foundation Stage Unit we are hoping to make this year a succesful and exciting one with your support. We will spend a lot of time helping the children settle in to the new building ensuruing a smooth transition for them.
This half term we will be introducing the 'Friendly Bears' to the children. The bears will be going home with the children in turn and we would like you to make an entry in the diary with your child commenting on what the bears have done with you. We will be using the bears to help the new children settle in and get used to the routines in the new Unit. The children will be making pictures of Goldilocks and bears, playing in our Goldilocks role play, retelling the story using puppets, writing letters and invitations, making biscuits and many other fun and enjoyable activities. At the end of the half term we will be having a Teddy Bear's picnic to celebrate the end of our theme.
Autumn 2 - Boxes
Our focus this half term is on boxes and each week we will be introducing a new themed box to the children. These will include a 'Jack and the Beanstalk', 'Whatever Next', 'Dinosaur'and Christmas box. In each box there will be a variety of resources linked to role play and the theme which the children will be able to play with or make for themselves. We will be having a Christmas activity week and the full time children will be performing a Nativity for their parents. The part time children will be given the opportunity to dress up in a selection of Christmas outfits. In the last week, the full time children will be going to the pantomime and all the children will be having a Christmas party.

Spring 1 - Cold Places
This half term the children will be learning all about cold places, looking at the animals, people and cold environments they live in. We will be investigating the properties of ice and focus on how we keep warm, in particular the types of clothing worn when it is cold. As part of our continuous provision we will be extending the gravel/sand and water area to inculde themed resources, developing the children's knowledge and vocabulary appropriate to cold places. The traditional tale will be 'The Gingerbread Man' and the children will have opportunities to retell the story through puppets, ICT and role play. At the end of the half term we will be celebrtaing Chinese New Year, developing the children's awareness of the beliefs and cultures of other people.
Spring 2 - Bob the Builder
The children will be focusing on 'Bob the Builder' this half term, looking at buildings in the environment, having a visit from a builder and using a variety of building resources and tools within the continuous provision. The traditional tale is the 'Three Little Pigs' and this also links to our theme of building materials and suitability for purpose. We will be examining materials both man made and natural and talking about where they come from. The children will be playing with a selection of 'Bob the Builder' vehicles and will be developing their awareness of colour, making collages and developing their creative skills. As part of World Book Week we will be visiting the local library and the children will all receive a book pack. We will also be having a dressing up day where the children can come to school dressed as a book character.
Summer 1 - All Creatures Great and Small
The children will have the opportunity this half term to learn about farm animals, wild animals, fish and their own or family pets. They will be developing their understanding of different habitats and environments and learn how to take care of living creatures. We will be going on a visit to St. Leonards Farm where the children will be able to have first hand experience of a variety of animals and have fun playing in the straw barn. We will be looking closely at the caterpillars that we have chosen as they develop into butterflies and the children will be recording and labelling what they see. The traditional tale for this half term is the Three Billy Goats Gruff and the children will be using ICT to learn more about animals.
