Walk to School

Dear Parent/Carer

October is International Walk to School Month and Heaton Avenue will be joining in from 3rd – 7th October which is our Walk to School Week.

At Heaton Avenue we want to encourage everyone to consider how they travel to school and to try walking. We will be promoting the idea of safe, healthy and environmentally-friendly travel to school. Our aims are to encourage the children to keep fit by walking to school and at the same time to reduce congestion near the school gates and to cut the number of car journeys to school.

The children will be covering road safety in their classes and year 3’s will be taking part in a 4 week Pedestrian Skills Training Course at school, run by Kirklees Road Safety Team.

We hope you will be able to support Walk to School Week by walking with your children educating them on safety as you go, giving them the experience and confidence to deal with traffic when they get older.

We realise that for some of you walking to school may be difficult, especially if you’re driving some distance to work, but we hope that you might consider car sharing or Park and Stride (parking away from the school and walking the rest of the way).

So grab a coat (and probably an umbrella!) and help us to make our Walk to School campaign a success.

Thank you
Mrs S Morley
